REGA’s 10 Point Plan for Australia's Lower Carbon Economy and for positioning Australia as a global supplier of renewable energy solutions Current world patterns of energy supply and consumption are unsustainable. A progressive increase in the contribution of renewable energy to meet the world’s energy needs presents the path to sustainability. REGA recognises that reducing emissions from the global electricity sector will require a three pronged approach from the world’s governments which includes; REGA has developed a plan to position Australia as a major supplier to the rapidly growing global market of renewable energy systems and is actively promoting this plan to Australian governments and industry. REGA’s 10 point strategy includes 1. The ongoing development of policies at federal and state level to promote growth in the renewable energy industry and increased penetration into the National Electricity Market; 2. Stable Government Policy on climate change and industry support measures administered nationally through the Departments of Environment and Heritage and Industry Tourism and resources; 3. Ongoing Research, Development and Commercialisation support from the Federal Government; 4. The establishment of an advisory board to the Federal Ministers for Industry and the Environment of independent renewable energy industry specialists; 5. Capturing the benefits of Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol to enable Australia to access the flexibility mechanisms including the adoption of a national emissions trading regime and other opportunities within the Protocol’s framework; 6. Equitable and consistent network access to new entrants and a cost structure that does not impose unfair penalties on renewable generators; 7. Nationally consistent and more timely development approval processes; 8. More effective and active promotion of Greenpower and other demand based schemes by state and territory governments; 9. A staged timetable for the compulsory purchase by the federal government and all state, territory and local governments of renewable energy to meet 100% of government energy needs by 2020; and 10. More aggressive and strategic targeting and support for Australia’s participation in overseas markets.
REGA believes that the implementation of its Plan for a lower carbon economy will enable Australia to position itself as a world leader in the supply of clean, sustainable energy solutions to meet domestic and global energy needs well into the 21st century and beyond.
